Action is needed now to make Glossop safe

The past two weeks have seen the worst weather conditions for some time, with several inches of thick snow covering the North of England. Throughout this time, the people of Glossopdale have had to endure the seeming indifference of the Local Authorities - High Peak Borough Council and Derbyshire County Council - towards the now appalling conditions, with untreated snow-covered roads and pavements quickly turning into sheets of ice because of freezing temperatures. The High Street in Glossop, the main thoroughfare in the town, lies untreated with either grit or salt. People are struggling to get to work or anywhere else, with simple journeys becoming a precarious ordeal. Even local public transport providers are calling off their services due to the lack of treatment on local roads.

Nobody expects to be able to carry on exactly as normal during especially difficult weather conditions. However, we do expect main roads and pavements to be made safe for traffic and pedestrians with the least delays. In and around Glossop, for days now nothing is happening and we are fed up.

If you have any stories to tell or photographs that document the conditions where you live, please send them to this site, and we will do our best to post them online. This site will serve as a record of the uncaring attitude and neglect of those who are responsible for keeping the highways and byways safe during difficult weather conditions, hopefully with a view towards collective action in future.
